Day 1: Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - A Scenic Journey with Qoricancha Expeditions
Your Short Inca Trail trip kicks off with a 4:00 am pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. You will drive for about 1.5 hours to Ollantaytambo train station where you will hop on the train to kilometer 104, which is the start of the Short Inca Trail. Once you are there, you will walk through an official checkpoint area where you will show your original passport in order to be verified and enter. You may even get a stamp as a memento from your trek.
The first noteworthy stop is the Chachabamba Inca site which you will encounter at the start of the trek. Your guide will provide a guided tour of the site and narrate the historical importance of the site. After your visit, you will continue on the trail which will consist of a gradual uphill ascent for about 3.5 hours. There will be several opportunities to stop, rest and enjoy fabulous views during your trek including time to capture photographs. The trail will take you through a wonderful cloud forest where you will have a chance of seeing bright orchids and possible hummingbirds too!
The next significant location you’ll experience is Wiñay Wayna, called a small Machu Picchu because of its picturesque location and lovely ruins. After a guided tour of Wiñay Wayna, you’ll have time to enjoy a well-deserved lunch.
After lunch, there is only about one hour left to hike to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). The Sun Gate is a spectacular viewing point, as it provides a unique panoramic view of Machu Picchu. At the Sun Gate you will arrive around 2:00 PM, where you can appreciate the beautiful views and perhaps enjoy a sunset view upon the citadel. From the Sun Gate, you’ll have an easy, quick, downhill walk for about 1 hour towards the upper zone of Machu Picchu to experience some of the best views of the site.
After the exploration, you’ll take a bus to Aguas Calientes to spend the night. When you arrive at your hotel, you can change and freshen up before a well-deserved dinner in local cuisine. It will be a wonderful and fulfilling day that concludes with an adventure to one of the most well-known historical sites in the world, Machu Picchu.

Day 2: Explore Machu Picchu & Optional Huayna Picchu Hike
You will have an early start to your day, enjoying breakfast at your hotel. Later, your guide will meet you and escort you to the bus station. You'll hop on one of the first buses, which will drive you up to the Machu Picchu citadel. Your guided excursion of this fantastic archaeological site will begin there. You'll be given a guided tour of the citadel through different temples, water channels, and pathways, allowing you to explore the history and significance of this special Inca city, more deeply.
If you plan for Huayna Picchu mountain tickets, you'll have the chance to hike Huayna Picchu after the Machu Picchu tour. The hike up to Huayna Picchu be about 2 hours long, from start to finish or actual climbing time. Huayna Picchu offers stunning views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding landscape.
After the Machu Picchu tour and your Huayna Picchu hike (if applicable), you'll take the bus back down to Aguas Calientes. Once back to Aguas Calientes, you will have the afternoon to get lunch at one of the restaurants.
After lunch, you'll get back on the train that will take you back to the Sacred Valley. When you arrive at the train station in the Sacred Valley, our driver will be waiting to bring you back to Cusco, where we will drop you off at your hotel. We estimate that you will return to Cusco around 7:30 pm.
It will be a full day of exploring, history, and memorable experiences with the marvels of Machu Picchu.

Day 03: Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley Hike: A Stunning Day Trip from Cusco
Your day starts early when your guide comes to pick you up from the hotel at 4:00 am to start the journey to one of Peru's most famous natural wonders, Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). The driving will take about 3 hours, with a 2-hour stop for breakfast in Cusipata along the way.
Once you arrive at the trailhead, which is at an elevation of 4,350 meters (14,271 feet), you will be ready to get started on the hike. At this altitude, the weather is likely to be cold and dry, so dress warmly and in layers. The trail is about 4 kilometers long and will take around 2.5 hours to hike to the top of Rainbow Mountain, which is an elevation of 5,150 meters (16,896 feet). Once you get to the top, you will have time to enjoy the breathtaking views, take some photos, and soak in the magnificent display of colors in the landscape.
After enjoying the views at Rainbow Mountain, you will continue your trek as you explore the Red Valley located on the backside of Rainbow Mountain. The Red Valley also has fantastic landscapes, because it is also that rich red color, creating a contrast with the beautiful vibrant colors of Rainbow Mountain.
After fully soaking in the beauty of Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley, you’ll retrace your steps back to the trailhead, where your driver will be waiting for you. From there, it’s about a 50-minute drive to a local restaurant, where you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch. After your meal, you’ll be driven back to Cusco, where you’ll arrive at your hotel around 5:50 pm.
This will be a day filled with unforgettable landscapes and natural beauty, making it an exceptional addition to your Peruvian adventure.
