TOUR SUMMARY
Why Choose the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?
Scenic Diversity
The Salkantay Trek offers an unmatched variety of landscapes and terrain. From lush cloud forests and high-altitude mountain passes to subtropical valleys, every day brings new and stunning scenery. One of the highlights is the view of the awe-inspiring Salkantay Mountain, often called the "Savage Mountain," towering above the trail.
Fewer Crowds
Compared to the Classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek is significantly less crowded. This allows for a more peaceful, immersive, and less commercialized experience, especially during high season.
Flexibility
The Salkantay Trek offers more flexibility with departure dates, itineraries, and types of experiences. From standard group hikes to luxury treks, you can tailor your adventure to fit your comfort level and preferences.
Cultural Immersion
This route passes through more remote Andean villages, offering trekkers the opportunity to interact with local communities and gain a deeper understanding of traditional ways of life in the Andes.
Daily Departures & Permit Availability
We offer daily departures for the Salkantay Trek. The only limitation is availability for Machu Picchu entry tickets, which we confirm at the time of booking.
Best Time to Go
Peru is a year-round destination, but the best time for the Salkantay Trek is during the dry season (May to October). Expect cool nights and sunny days, often with wildflowers blooming along the trail. November and December mark the beginning of the wet season, while January to March is the peak of the rainy season. During these months, rainfall is frequent, so good rain gear is essential.
Optional Huayna Picchu Ticket
Huayna Picchu, or the "Young Mountain," is the iconic peak seen in the background of Machu Picchu photos. If you’d like to hike it, we can reserve the 10 AM time slot (the only time available after the Salkantay Trek). Advance notice is required as only 50 tickets are available per time slot. The cost is $75 per person and it is completely optional.
Choose the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu for a journey that combines natural beauty, cultural depth, and personalized adventure—without the crowds.
