Best Time to Hike the Salkantay Trek & Sacred Valley

The best time for this tour is during the dry season from April to October, when the weather is more stable, and the views across the Andes are at their clearest.

  • May to September: Ideal trekking conditions, clear skies, and excellent mountain views
  • April & October: Fewer crowds with mixed weather conditions
  • November to March: Rainy season, greener landscapes, but more challenging trail conditions

We operate this tour only from May to October, when conditions are safe. During other months, heavy rains make the trail dangerous. Alternative treks, such as Lares or Ausangate, may be available.

Once you’ve explored Llactapata and enjoyed the views, you’ll head downhill for about 2 hours to the hydroelectric station. Here, our chef will have a well-earned lunch ready for you. This will be your last lunch with the trekking team, so it’s a good time to thank them for all their help.

From the hydroelectric station, you’ll walk along the railway tracks for about 3 hours to reach Aguas Calientes, the town at the entrance to Machu Picchu.
