Here's what you need to know about experiencing both the sunrise and sunset at Machu Picchu:

1. Sunrise at Machu Picchu:

  • To witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu, you'll need to arrive at the site early in the morning, ideally before sunrise. Be prepared for an early start, as you may need to catch one of the first buses from Aguas Calientes, the nearby town, to Machu Picchu's entrance.
  • Arriving early ensures you can find a good spot to watch the sunrise. The iconic moment when the sun rises above the mountains and illuminates Machu Picchu is a breathtaking sight and well worth the early wake-up.
  • It's a good idea to check the sunrise time in advance, as it varies throughout the year due to the changing angle of the sun.

2. Sunset at Machu Picchu:

  • Consider hiking to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) or the Inca Bridge, both of which offer picturesque views of Machu Picchu and its surroundings. These hikes are typically done during the day but can be timed to enjoy the late afternoon scenery.
  • Usually afternoon time is less people in Machu Picchu which gives you the opportunity to  enjoy Train tours to Machu Picchu in a better way.

Tips for Both Sunrise and Sunset:

  • Be sure to purchase your Machu Picchu entrance tickets in advance, as they have limited availability, and entry regulations may change.
  • Respect the rules and guidelines set by the authorities to preserve and protect Machu Picchu, such as staying on designated paths and not climbing on the structures.
  • Dress in layers, as the weather in the high-altitude Andes can change rapidly. Bring a jacket, hat, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes.
